Written by Administrator
Saturday, 26 May 2007
Two fully-funded PhD positions are available to UK/EU nationals, in the research group of Professor Nigel Simpkins, at the University of Birmingham, starting October 1, 2007, or soon after. The project areas likely to be available include:
• Total synthesis of natural products related to garsubellin, clusianone and nemorosone, and analogues, as anti-cancer agents. • Asymmetric synthesis of functionalised cyclopropanes and cyclopropenes, and their applications to synthesis. • Total synthesis of welwistatin and analogues as potential multi-drug resistance reversing agents.
Background information relating to the some of these projects can be found in recent publications, see for example: Organic Letters, 2006, 8, 5283; Organic Letters, 2005, 7, 4087.
Successful candidates will join an active research group, which is housed in new research laboratories, and has access to state-of-the-art facilities. Independent and highly motivated students with an interest in organic synthesis are encouraged to apply.
Candidates must have a first degree (MSci or MChem) in Chemistry, or a relevant related discipline, at a good class 2i standard or above. The stipend is at the standard EPSRC rate (£12,600 per annum in 2007). There is an opportunity for industrial collaboration with one of these projects.
Interested applicants should contact Professor Nigel S. Simpkins, School of Chemistry, University of Nottingham, NG7 2RD, U.K. Email:
