PhD-student: Controlling ultra fast charge dynamics in nanostructured materials PDF Print E-mail
Written by Suleman Shahid
Thursday, 19 January 2006

Job description
State-of-the-art femtosecond spectroscopic techniques will be combined with nanometer control of material design to investigate the dynamic response of charge carriers in nanostructured semi conducting materials following absorption of a photon, and the extent to which the response can be tailored through intelligent design on a nanometer scale. Engineering the size, spacing and distribution of nanocrystals in the samples will optimise Nanoscale energy transfer. Such Knowledge and control over energy transfer and damping rates are essential for the successful technological applications of nanocrystals, e.g. in solar cells.

Requirements

University Graduate
You have completed (or will shortly complete) your undergraduate education with a Master's degree in Physics or Physical Chemistry or equivalent, ideally with experience in either non-linear spectroscopic (THz) techniques, or in the field of nanophysics. The degree must entitle the holder to embark on doctoral studies, without having to acquire any further qualifications in the country in which the diploma is obtained.

Conditions of employment
The position is intended as full-time (38 hrs / week, 12 months / year) appointment for the duration of four years. Appointment will be in the service of Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) according to the existing EU hiring conditions, meaning that the fellow receives additional travel, mobility and career development allowances.
To find out if you are eligible for this MC-EST fellowship, use the following criteria:
- If you have already been registered in a PhD study program you can still apply for a fellowship, if the program has not yet been completed. Researchers who have already obtained a doctoral degree are not eligible for the early stage actions, independently of the time taken to acquire it;
- You are a national of any country. If you are a national of the country of the host institute you can apply only if you have resided in a Third country for at least four years of the five years immediately prior to the (intended) start date;
- You have not been resident in the country of the host institute for over 12 months in the 36 months prior to the (intended) start date of the fellowship in one of the countries;
- You have less than four years of research experience (early stage researcher);
- You are willing to move to the Netherlands for the duration of the project.

AMOLF assists any new foreign employees with housing and visa applications. After successful completion of the PhD research, a PhD degree will be granted at the University of Amsterdam.

- Teaching & Research (Scientific expertise: Natural Sciences)
- Research trainees, non-tenured lecturers, researchers (Scientific expertise: Natural Sciences)

Organization
Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter
The FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) is one of the national research institutes of the Stichting FOM (the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter). The institute employs around 200 people, half of whom are research staff (faculty staff, postdocs, and PhD students). AMOLF provides a dynamic environment, where advanced research is performed in research groups comprising around 8 scientists on average. See also www.amolf.nl.

Conditions of employment
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: four years
Maximum hours per week: 38
