Function title: Scientific programmer The tasks of the scientific programmer
will be to: • Develop a CMS-based web portal for data entry and retrieval
into PostGIS databases. The starting point is a portal that uses the Typo3 CMS,
with XFORMs for data entry, and components like Mapserver/Cartoweb as a PostGIS
front end. • Write documentation for the web portal that is created. •
Help to further extend and improve the existing EcoGRID data model. • Link
output from the web portal to the Kepler workflow system for data display and
analysis. • Play an active role in communicating with users about the wishes
and possibilities, and realize these in the system.
Requirements
Required education/skills:We are looking for a scientific programmer who will
work closely with CBPG staff and partners in the GAN project. The programmer
should perceive multidisciplinary teamwork as the ideal modus operandi and be
enthusiastic about applied research in the natural sciences. The programmer will
work on the interface of spatial databases and web-portal development. He/she
should be able to independently translate questions from users into software
solutions as well as user interfaces. Finally, the programmer will be expected
to play an active role in educating users by writing tutorials and documentation
for the system components that are her/his responsibility. To some extent, the
scientific programmer may also take part in the FlySafe
programme. Applicants for this position must have: • Been trained in
informatics or a closely related field at MSc level (or BSc level with work
experience). • Some experience in scientific teamwork. • Proven
communication skills. • Well-developed skills in at least web portal
development or programming in PHP, and at least one of the following languages:
C, C , Java. • Experience in distributed database design. • Preferably
worked with GIS software, spatial databases and open source software
(postgreSQL. The Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics
(IBED), which comprises 17 research groups, concentrates on the interactions
between living organisms and their physical and chemical environment. The
Computational Bio- and Physical Geography (CBPG) research group ( www.science.uva.nl/ibed-cbpg)
deals with the computational issues that arise in this context. CBPG
participates in the BSIK-VLe project ( www.vl-e.nl) and has recently started to work in
two other projects, namely EcoGRID-GAN (‘GAN’) and FlySafe.
