Written by Suleman Shahid
Thursday, 12 April 2007
The research group on Computer Engineering (web page) at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) has an opening for a PhD student in the field of embedded and mobile information and communication systems.

Description

In the future, information technology will become more and more distributed and embedded into our environment. Examples are RFID tags that are attached to all kinds of objects, networks of sensors that provide information about our environment or embedded multimedia devices. In the emerging area of distributed embedded systems and systems on chip there is the need for successful research in terms of theoretical investigations and/or hardware-software design.

Position

The Computer Engineering and Networks Laboratory offers a creative international environment, a possibility to conduct highly competitive research on a global scale and involvement in teaching. Within the project, there is plenty of opportunities to cooperate with national and international partners. There is the possibility to gain valuable experience in the emerging field of embedded and mobile systems, in terms of new theoretical models and methods and/or in prototype systems. It is expected that a successful PhD thesis is written in a time frame of 3-4 years.

Education

The candidate must hold a M.S. or equivalent with top performance in a field that is closely related to computer science or electrical engineering. He should have interest in conducting original highly competitive scientific research, publishing the results in top conferences and scientific journals, and participating in teaching duties. Maturity, self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as a team player in local and international research teams are expected. German language skills are not required, English is mandatory.

Application procedure
