Siemens-Germany: Research Internship (Grad or MSc student) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Suleman
Tuesday, 16 January 2007
Position: Research Internship (Grad or MSc student)
Start:  March/April 07
Duration: 6-9 months

Theme: Metropolitan Ethernet: Ethernet in the access and aggregation regions of the MAN

Keywords: Metro Ethernet, Carrier Grade Ethernet, forwarding, routing

Description:
Ethernet's plug&play facet, its flexibility and its low interface cost lead to its expansion from the regular Local Area Network (LAN) scope to the access and aggregation regions of the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), becoming a potential competitor for technologies such as ATM.
Ethernet was however conceived having in mind LANs and some of the characteristics that make it appealing in such environments undermine its deployment in large scale networks such as the MAN. The realization of such problems is the attempt of several works at solving one or the other aspect of such drawbacks (e.g., RSTP, MSTP, VLAN XC, PBT).

Siemens AG Corporate Technology, Information and Communications invites you to participate on an ongoing project in the field of Metro Ethernet. What we offer you is the possibility of developing your research in the context of an innovative project, in the core of a dynamic industry environment and to have contact with external research institutes  and researchers. Work to be done relates to conceptualization support, experiments (simulations, demonstration). Our expectations are:

*       Preferential background in Electrical Engineering, specially in Telecommunications;
*       C/C++ , java programming skills;
*       Basic acquaintance with simulation tools such as ns2, OMNeT++, Matlab;
*       OSI Layers 2 and above basic knowledge;
*       Preferential IP routing knowledge.
