Georgia International Fellowship Program

The Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia announces new a
international fellowship program-MUSE Georgia for those interested in
the Georgian culture/literary and scientific heritage as it pertains to
political, scientific and cultural realities. Participants will be awarded
stipend and spend time working on their professional development in
Georgia.

MUSE Objectives:
The International
Literary and Research Fellowship Muse is targeted to foster the
Georgian-foreign literary and research exchange; to set up productive
conditions for the foreign writers and scholars interested in Georgia's
cultural past and present to learn Georgian culture and promote their broad
creative and academic contacts with the Georgian writers, artists and
scholars; to support foreign writers and scholars whose actual literary and
academic projects thematically refer to Georgia, or who want to link the
immediate segment of their professional activities to
Georgia.
Assessment criteria
The major eligibility criterion for
the commission is the significance of the estimated results of the
submitted projects for the Georgian culture and its comprehensive
integration into the global literary and humanities context; high level
of literary and scholarly expertise, and the project implementation
terms. Among the academic projects the preference will be given to the PhD
candidates; among the literary projects - to those writers whose
book-project has been accepted for publication in their home country under a
contract with a press.
Expectations
The Muse Fellowship organizers
expect:
1. One week before the expiration of the stipend term, submission
of a written report presenting the output of the work implemented
during the time spent in Georgia; 2. In the following six-nine months
period - submission of the output for translation and publication in
Georgian;
The Georgian translation and publication of the output
presented by the grantee in his/her native language is arranged by the
Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, upon the permission of the
press which holds the copyright of the publication of the grantee's work in
the native language. The author receives no honorarium from the first
edition of his/her work in Georgian; the total of sales' proceeds is
transferred to the fellowship fund to provide for the upgrading of the
fellowship term services.
Fellowship Terms
Ministry of
Education and Science of Georgia grants annual 8 literary and 4 research
fellowships (except for the year of 2006, see below). Each fellowship is
granted for three months.
The amount of the fellowship for 2006 is
earmarked Euro 750 per month; also - free accommodation and utility
services. The fellowship is tax- exempt.
The grantee's insurance is
optional and free of charge.
Application for the fellowship can be
submitted by the writers and scholars, which are the citizens of any country
outside Georgia, notwithstanding their age, confessional or political
beliefs.
The fellowship does not cover travel costs to and from
Georgia.
No extra free accommodation is provided for the grantees
attended by their family members. Upon their choice the attendants can stay
in the apartment provided for the grantee, or under a preliminary
agreement with the fellowship organizers, rent a room in the Muse Palace
for preferable length of stay. The total of stipend is not increased in case
of the attending family members; the attendants' insurance costs are not
covered by the stipend foundation.

Cultural Centre MUSE
The Muse Palace in which the grantees reside is
located in the outskirts of one of the central districts of the capital of
Tbilisi, surrounded by a park.
500 meters away from the palace is
located the Turtle Lake with recreational and entertainment complexes.
Adjacent to it is the Open Skies Museum of Georgian ethnic culture and
traditional architecture.
Fresh air, tranquil environment and beauteous
nature provide ideal conditions for creative activities and intellectual
exchange between the grantees.
The grantees will have the
opportunity to establish contacts with the artists and scholars coming from
various countries of the world and visiting the Muse International
Center.
The grantees are provided with 24-hour free internet access,
communal self-service kitchen and the restaurant abounding with Georgian
food. Each room is equipped with a telephone-set, a computer, a TV- set,
a fridge and a shower.
For the sake of tranquility and maximal securing
of work conditions the attendance of underaged children is not
allowed.
No pets allowed for the grantees.
The grantees, who for
their work need consultancy of Georgian historians, ethnographers,
philologists, or other experts, will be provided with such services. For the
same needs, the grantees are provided with English, French, German, Italian
and Spanish speaking interpreters. All services of this kind are free of
charge.
Fellowship Panel
The independent fellowship panel members
are Georgian writers and scholars, annually invited by the fellowship board.
The panel members are not supposed to publicize their individual decisions
or clarify and justify the motives of their choice to the applicant. The
panel members have the same rights with the final decision. The list of the
panel members is published right upon the selection of grantees. The
applicants are informed about the decision of the panel in two months
time after the application.
Grantee's Obligations
1. A grantee
is obliged to spend at least two months out of the three in
Georgia; 2. A grantee not able to use the stipend, in three months before
the commencement of the grant period should inform the fellowship panel
(one month for 2006 application)
. 3. The last Friday of each month is
the day for meeting the journalists. The mandatory time allocated for a
grantee to meet the journalists on this day is two hours. Meetings with the
journalists any other time for the grantees are unlimited. 4. The last
week of the third month the grantee is obliged to make an additional public
presentation at the selected University based on the academic topic
chosen by the grantee. The minimal time allocated for the presentation and
the discussions is two academic hours.
Application
The grant
applicant must attach to the standard application form the
following:
1. Bio-Bibliography; 2. Two photos; 3. Project
summary, indicating the possible volume of the projected work (not more than
A4 format 2 print pages); 4. Project implementation plan and estimated time
of completion (A4 format I print page).

For the current pilot grant year of 2006, the Ministry
of Education and Science of Georgia, as exclusion, provides one literary
and one research fellowship for September-October-November grant
period. The application deadline for this fellowship is June 15, 2006. (If
the documents are sent by mail, valid is the mailing date verified by the
postal seal on the envelope).
For the first half of the 2007
(January-June) the grant application deadline is August 15,
2006.
