PhD Studentships in High Performance and Robust Systems (HIPARSYS) School of Engineering Sciences
Written by Suleman Shahid
Monday, 25 December 2006
A PhD studentship is now available within the Computational
Engineering & Design Research Group, School of Engineering Sciences
(SES), which will fully cover University tuition fees (at EU/UK level)
and provide a tax-free bursary of £12,300 per year, rising annually in
line with the UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate, for a three-year
duration.
Further financial support for deserving international students is available.
The PhD student will work in the area of uncertainty quantification
and robust design of gas turbine components. The primary focus of the
work will be on constructing parametric CAD models to represent
geometric variability using measurement data and developing advanced
numerical techniques to quantify the resulting variability in
performance. The analysis tools developed will be applied to optimize
performance robustness in the presence of uncertainty. The nature of
the work is primarily computational and analytical. Good programming
skills are essential. The student will be required to work with a group
of post-doctoral research fellows in a coordinated fashion.
SES is a top 5 rated research school with an
international reputation. The successful candidate will work with a
group of highly motivated, first class research students in the areas
of stochastic mechanics and aerospace design optimization.
The School is a diverse community which is committed to creating an
inclusive working and learning environment in which all individuals are
equally treated and valued, and can achieve their potential. The School
considers all studentship applications in relation to academic criteria
and regardless of the individual’s race, gender, or belief.
Entry requirements
The studentship is available to candidates with the equivalent of a
first class or upper second class degree in a relevant discipline, e.g.
Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics
or a related quantitative discipline.
The studentship is at the standard EPSRC (Engineering and Physical
Sciences Research Council) rate, commencing as soon as possible.
In the first instance, potential candidates should contact Professor Andy Keane for further information about the project.
