The Synthetic Enzymes project is a collaboration between CSIRO
Entomology, CSIRO Molecular and Health Technologies, CSIRO
Manufacturing and Materials Technology, the Research School of
Chemistry at the Australian National University, Canberra and several
international experts in Cambridge, Manchester and Strasbourg. The
research is focussed at the interface of chemistry and biology, to
engineer new enzymes for synthetic transformations. Such a capability
could revolutionise Australian industry by enabling the production of
environmentally friendly catalysts.
Successful candidates will be enrolled at the University and
work in Canberra or Melbourne. The research is at the interface of

Applicants for scholarship should hold, or expect to hold, a
bachelor’s degree with at least upper to second-class honours or the
equivalent from a recognised university. Subject to satisfactory
progress, a scholarship is tenable for the period of the PhD course,
normally three years.
The scholarships provide a stipend of $A21,000 pa (tax free).
Tuition fee waivers for international students may be provided for
suitable applicants. Grants towards relocation and conferences may be
available.
