Materials Chemist

ANSTO

  • $68K - $102K (plus super)
  • 3 Year Term

ANSTO is Australia’s national centre for nuclear science and technology research and development and is focussed on delivering the benefits of nuclear science and technology to the community and industry. Within ANSTO, the Institute of Materials and Engineering Science (IMES) is a major centre of materials expertise, employing a multidisciplinary team of physicists, chemists, earth scientists and engineers. Our facilities for processing, testing and characterising materials are world class and in many cases, unique in Australia.

We have an opportunity for a PhD graduate with a strong innovation focus, good communication skills and a proven publication record to join the IMES Project on Atomic Scale Processes in Nuclear Materials. The successful applicant will undertake original scientific research on the synthesis, crystal structure, microstructure, and properties of oxide ceramics. A major part of this work will be directed toward an understanding of radiation tolerance in nuclear materials. The successful candidate will have:

  • A strong grounding in solid-state chemistry and physics
  • Previous experience in the characterisation of nuclear materials (e.g., X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, Rietveld structure refinement, spectroscopic methods)
  • A willingness to work with radioactive materials under strictly regulated and controlled conditions. Appropriate training will be provided, where necessary

The researcher will interact closely with other research scientists and technical staff and be encouraged to proactively seek new collaborative research opportunities in nuclear materials.

This appointment will be offered for an initial three-year term, negotiable and potentially renewable subject to performance and operational requirements. To be eligible for engagement, applicants will require a security and medical assessment. Australian citizenship is preferred.
