Scientific Programmer in Scientific Visualization and Virtual Reality PDF Print E-mail

Job description
The Scientific Visualization and Virtual Reality (SVVR) group at the Section Computational Science is a young research group responsible for education and research in subjects such as Interaction in Virtual Environments, Interactive Distributed Computing, Computational Steering, Visualization Applications and Devices. Through a close collaboration with SARA Computing and Networking Services, the SVVR group has access to a broad range of VR and interactive visualization devices, including a fully-immersive CAVE and several in-house developed devices.

Tasks
With the acceptance of the EU-funded project "Advancing Clinico-Genomic Trials (ACGT) on Cancer", the SVVR research group has a job opening for a scientific programmer for a period of 2 years, starting as soon as possible. The appointee will work with our researchers in the design and implementation of an interactive, distributed framework for the visualization of scientific data that result from large-scale computational simulations. Within the ACGT project, the appointee will work in collaboration with laboratories in Greece on the interactive visual analysis of in-silico tumour simulations. In addition, this framework will be applied to other ongoing research projects within the Section Computational Science as well as in relevant courses given by the group.

Requirements

University Graduate
• MSc degree in computer science, or equivalent
• Experience with C/C++ and scripting languages
• Experience with visualization, computer graphics and/or Virtual Reality
• Experience with Linux
• Fluent in oral and written English
• Strong interest in scientific visualization and Virtual Reality.

The Faculty of Science at the Universiteit van Amsterdam is one of Europe’s foremost institutions of higher education and research in its chosen fields of specialization. It plays an active role in international science networks and collaborates with universities and industry. The Faculty has approximately 2,000 students and 1,500 staff members spread over four departments and ten research institutes. Each institute has its own research programme, a substantial part of which is externally funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the Dutch government, the EU and various private enterprises.

In 2010, the Faculty will relocate to the Science Park Amsterdam. Ambitious building projects are paving the way for this relocation. The move will make the Park one of the largest centres of academic research in the Netherlands.

Conditions of employment
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: for two years
Maximum hours per week: 38

Additional conditions of employment:
This will be a full time appointment (38 hours per week) for a period of two years, starting as soon as possible (with a possible extension for a third year).
