Research Fellow - Stokes Research Institute
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 07 September 2006
University of Limerick
Research Fellow (Specific Purpose
Contract)
Stokes Research Institute
The Stokes
Research Institute, based on the University of Limerick campus, currently has a
compliment of over 30 full time PhD researchers and 25 post-doctoral fellows.
The group was formed over 16 years ago and initially focussed on gas turbine
aerodynamics and thermal management issues. It has since grown, to include all
significant issues in electronic systems reliability, energy management and
design of novel microfluidic devices for the genetic diagnosis of cancer. The
Institute is now a multidisciplinary, multinational group of engineers and
scientists working in close collaboration with many industries, hospitals and
government organisations. The Institute seeks an enthusiastic and dynamic
individual to work on two Industry-Led Research Projects currently underway at
the Institute.
The Industry-Led Research Programme funded by Enterprise
Ireland has been running at the Institute since July 2005 and the first phase of
this scheme is due for completion in October 2007. The overall aim of this
research project is to apply state-of-the-art proven technologies in
solving generic biological problems faced by the Irish BioIndustry with a view
to improving and adding value to this industry sector. Enterprise Ireland have
acquired the support and interest of Irish companies for this project through
company visits and from these Irish Biodiagnostics and Biopharma companies have
identified the following areas of priority for research.
Biodiagnostics:
* Quantitative and qualitative read out
devices for Point-of-Care (POC) testing. * Novel miniature immunoassay
platforms. * Improved detection
sensitivity.
The projects are led by an
industrial advisory panel comprised of leading scientists and business managers
from various Biopharma and Medical Diagnostics companies in Ireland. Both
projects are collaborative and are comprised of leading academics from Irish
Universities with expertise in microfluidics, microfabrication,
microelectronics, sensors and photonics, biodiagnostics and process engineering:
* University of Limerick (Stokes Research Institute). *
Tyndall National Institute, Cork. * University College Cork
(Department of Biochemistry). * University College Dublin (School
of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering) * Dublin City University
(Biomedical Diagnostics Institute). * National University of Ireland,
Galway (National Diagnostics Centre).
The University of Limerick's role
in these projects is the development of novel microfluidic technology for
bioprocess sampling and on-chip immunoassays and the successful candidate will
be expected to contribute significantly on the design, testing and benchmarking
of this technology against current state-of-the-art in conjunction with our
collaborators.
Selection Criteria
Essential:
* A
Ph.D. (or due to be completed by the end of the year) in Mechanical, Biomedical
or Chemical Engineering or closely related discipline. * Experience in
the preparation of CAD models using Solidworks, Pro/Engineer or
AutoCAD. * Experience with tissue culture and immunoassay
protocols. * Good interpersonal and project management
skills.
Desirable:
* Ability to learn/use commercial
engineering simulation software in Computational Fluid Dynamics (FLUENT and CFX)
and Finite Element Analysis (Ansys). * Experience with surface science
issues and characterisation of polymeric materials. * Microfabrication
and prototyping experience. * Knowledge of regulatory issues in the
biomedical and biopharma sectors.
