The Programs in Sustainable International Development is a community of concerned students, faculty and alumni from over 80 countries. Our mission is to help build a new generation of development planners and policy makers for whom a global society free of poverty, preventable disease, and environmental degradation is achievable.

Students in the Master of Arts in Sustainable International Development (SID) Program are early to mid-career development professionals who consider the state of world development, probe issues that affect future generations, and broaden skills necessary to plan, negotiate, implement, monitor and evaluate development programs. SID has gained international recognition as an innovative degree in examining models of development for their achievements in reducing poverty and inequality, raising quality of life and conserving the environment. SID seeks fresh thinking about complex relationships, bridging areas of concern reserved traditionally for scientists or social scientists, policy makers, human rights advocates, or development practitioners.

All students spend their first year in residence at The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University deepening their understanding of development theory and practice, and improving basic skills in management, economics, statistics, ecology, geography, and spoken and written English. Students are trained in the use of computers for academic and professional work. Depending on their courses, they learn word processing, spreadsheets, statistical packages, graphic presentations, and geographic information systems.

The Feldman Fellow agrees to work for the second year as an intern at a project site related to integrated conservation and development. Past fellows have worked on establishing GIS, biological monitoring, and enterprise creation for a rainforest conservation project. Although the Master of Arts in Sustainable International Development program accepts applications on a rolling basis, application materials for the Feldman Fellowship must be submitted by March 31, 2006. Applications will be acknowledged upon receipt of ALL required documents (once the application is considered “COMPLETE”.)

Applicants who do not qualify for the Feldman Fellowship will be considered for general admission to SID with financial aid.
