UK: PhD Studentship in The Area of Economic Regulation

Applications are invited from students who hold a masters degree in economics or a related discipline for a PhD studentship in the area of economic regulation. Proposals in the areas of utility regulation, the introduction of competition to markets which were previously monopolised, and consumer choice are particularly welcome. The student will be based in the School of Management (MGT) and their main supervisor will be Professor Catherine Waddams , director of the ESRC Centre for Competition Policy.

The successful PhD appointee will become a student member of the Centre for Competition Policy. As well as the inter-disciplinary support network of other PhD students and members of the Centre, student members are expected to attend the weekly seminar programme and regular research discussions throughout term-time.

The MGT studentship will cover the current home fees for PhD and a stipend currently at £10,500 per annum with research expenses of £750 per annum. It will be awarded for one year in the first instance, renewable for a further two years subject to satisfactory academic progress. The student will be expected to provide some assistance with the MGT tutorial programme to a maximum of 50 hours per academic year.

Students are also members of the School of Management, close to the Centre for Competition Policy, where research students are situated in a dedicated lab, with their own desk space. Each PhD student has access to a powerful desktop workstation, with large storage capacity, fast internet access and all the latest Microsoft Productivity tools and Data Analysis software. They will also have access to the University network and all library resources. A research training course will be provided for the first year of study.
