Research scientist: Department of Human Genetics PDF Print E-mail
Written by Suleman Shahid
Tuesday, 20 June 2006

Job description
As a research scientist working in the Department of Human Genetics, you will be part of a team investigating the potential applications of custom-made oligonucleotide microarrays generated by a new, in-house developed system, the FlexArrayer from Flexgen. The project focuses on the design and selection of oligonucleotides for the arrays from (genomic) sequences, and, after array hybridisation, on the initial data analysis. Applications to be tested include gene expression, RNA-splicing, genome-tiling, re-sequencing and mutation detection. Your activities will include participation in the selection and/or development of appropriate software for the different phases of the project. The research project will be performed in close collaboration with the researchers applying the FlexArrayer in their project.

Requirements

University Graduate
You hold a PhD, MSc or Higher Professional Education diploma in Molecular Biology or Bioinformatics and have a strong affiliation with molecular biological research in a multidisciplinary setting. You are familiar with basic techniques of molecular biology, such as molecular cloning, PCR, electrophoresis, labelling and hybridisation. You have experience with microarray-based technology, primer design, and possess programming skills. Since most studies do not provide training in this combination of skills, you are encouraged to apply if you graduated recently in Bioinformatics or followed a career in IT after an initial training in biology. An enthusiastic team player, you are also inquisitive, creative and ambitious. You are a good communicator and fluent in both written and spoken English.
