New Zealand: PhD Award in Economics, University of Ottago
Written by Suleman Shahid
Monday, 27 March 2006
Anyone who is accepted to do a full-time PhD in the Department of
Economics at the University of Otago is eligible to apply for the
postgraduate award. It is permissible to apply for the award in
anticipation of being accepted as a PhD student. Note that the process
of applying for the scholarship is separate to the process of applying
to be accepted as a PhD student. For more information on the PhD
programme at Otago, and the application process, click here<http://www.business.otago.ac.nz/econ/courses/postgrad/research.html>
Emolument
For New Zealand students (and students who qualify for New Zealand
fees*) the award is worth NZ$15,000 annually towards living costs. In
addition, the award will cover the cost of fees. (Note: the award will
not cover the cost of fees for any taught papers taken by the student,
even if taking the papers is a condition of being accepted to do a PhD.)
The award will be made in equal payments at the end of each month. The
first payment will be made at the end of the month in which the
candidate enrols.
* From January 2006 International PhD Students who have a suitably qualified supervisor will qualify for New Zealand fees.
Application Process
Applications will be considered twice each year, with applications
closing at the end of April and end of November. Anyone interested in
the award should apply in writing to the Director of Graduate Studies
(Ian King) in the Department of Economics (not the University's
Scholarships Office). Applications by email are encouraged. To email

Tenure
The award is tenable for three years, or until the thesis is
submitted, whichever is the sooner. However, payment of the award in
the second and third years is subject to satisfactory progress being
made.
It is a requirement of the award that the student be based in Dunedin,
unless the thesis requires an approved period of field work. Prolonged
absence from Dunedin will result in the award being terminated.
If an award holder transfers from full-time to part-time status, he/she will become ineligible for any further payments.
Criteria
The award will be made on the basis of academic merit.
Additional Income
The award cannot be held concurrently with any other postgraduate
scholarship or award, worth more than half the annual emolument of the
Department of Economics Postgraduate Award. Research grants, travel
grants, and any grants specifically designated to cover research costs,
for which
the candidate must produce receipts, are not considered to be awards in this instance.
There is no specific limit on any other form of income, provided that
the student is able to pursue full time study and make satisfactory
progress on the thesis.
