PhD Studentship: Sustainable Building Design

The Welsh School of Architecture is one of the leading
research schools in the UK, with an established
international reputation for research in architecture
science and sustainable design, history and theory and
professional practice. Applications are invited for this 3
year studentship sponsored by the Building Research
Establishment (BRE) Trust to commence as soon as possible.
Funding:
The studentship covers tuition fees, a grant of £15,000 per
annum and reasonable student travel and subsistence
expenses for travel between BRE premises and the
University, plus limited European and international travel.
There is a possibility of further post-doctoral career
opportunities within BRE or the School for the right
applicant, upon successful completion of the PhD programme.
The Project:
The successful applicant will work with Dr Ian Knight at
the Welsh School of Architecture, within the newly
established BRE Centre for Sustainable Building Design and
Dr Robin Wiltshire based at BRE in Hertfordshire. Time will
be split between the two sites.
The project title is ‘Optimising thermal storage
techniques to increase the useful energy outputs from small
scale renewable energy and CHP in buildings.' The aims
of the research study are:
to demonstrate that the effective output of low and
zero carbon technologies can be raised by means of Thermal
Storage techniques
to review the current knowledge in this subject area
and identify barriers
to the uptake of Thermal Storage
techniques
to obtain an estimate of the magnitude of this
potentially increased output for various technologies
to assist with the development of models for Thermal
Storage techniques, for existing modelling tools such as
EnergyPlus and ESP-r
to work in conjunction with an EU funded project
helping to define policy towards the use of Thermal Storage
with Renewable Energy systems and CHP in buildings
as a result of the research, to assess the impact that
such techniques might have in improving the carbon
emissions performance of the existing housing stock in the
UK
to pursue focused research on one of the promising
storage technology options.
Eligibility:
Applicants (Home/EU only) should have a good honours degree
(minimum upper second class or equivalent) from an approved
UK or overseas University in architecture, or
building-related engineering discipline, and must have a
good understanding of the design of building services, in
particular thermal energy systems. Computer skills are
essential.
