The International Max Planck Research School for Computer Science (IMPRS-CS) is a graduate school jointly run by the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (MPI-INF), the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS), and the Computer Science Department at Saarland University.

MPI-INF and MPI-SWS are among 80 institutes (MPIs) of the Max Planck Society. The MPIs are Germany's prime research facilities with world-class, foundational research in the fields of medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, technology, and the humanities. Since 1948, MPI researchers have won 17 Nobel prizes, which testifies to the quality and innovation of MPI research programs.

PhD Program and Scholarships

The IMPRS-CS (International Max Planck Research School for Computer Science) offers a Ph.D program upon successful completion of which students receive a Doctorate Degree in Computer Science from Saarland University. The PhD program is open to students who already hold a Master's degree and wish to pursue a PhD in Computer Science. In addition, students who have a Bachelor's degree from a 4-year program at a research-oriented institution and have shown outstanding performance (as demonstrated, for example, by refereed publications) are also eligible.

IMPRS-CS holds a funding agreement with Microsoft Research Cambridge (MSRC), which will contribute towards PhD scholarships in areas of research related to MSRC starting in 2008. Recipients of these scholarships have the opportunity for internships at MSRC and other collaboration with a world-leading industrial research lab.
