Controlling membrane proteins through manipulation of the membrane
Departments of Chemistry and Biology
An EPSRC funded PhD studentship is available as part of a new project focusing on the effect of physical properties of lipid bilayers on embedded membrane proteins. The successful applicant will become involved in an exciting cross disciplinary project which will involve chemical synthesis of novel photoactive lipids, preparation and biochemical characterization of membrane proteins and analysis of membranes and membrane proteins using the newly installed NMR spectrometer in Hull. The student will also get the opportunity to carry out high field NMR measurements at the University of Frankfurt.

The successful applicant will have a good BSc or Masters degree in chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics or related disciplines. Applicants with a background in physics or biology are encouraged if they can demonstrate an interest in bridging disciplines.

The student's stipend is £12,300 per annum (tax free) plus income from laboratory demonstrations. It is preferred that the studentship will commence in September 2006, however alternative starting dates can be negotiated. UK citizens are eligible for full funding. EU citizens will have tuition fees funded. Non-EU citizens are not eligible.
