Netherlands: PhD in System Optimization of Multimodal Freight Networks PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Saturday, 06 September 2008
The research involves developing a modelling approach for combining economics of transport network design and environmental economics into an integrated optimization method. This integrated approach will enable an investment and exploitation analysis combined with a valuation of external effects such as CO2 emissions, noise nuisance and fine dust emissions of capacity enlargements. Port and terminal capacity needs extending within the boundaries of sustainable accommodation of the expected freight flows. Organizational and technical improvements could also be implemented in ports and terminals. All improvements must lead to better sustainability, better reliability and lower costs. The investment and exploitation projections for various scenarios will be evaluated together with organizational and technical designs in the light of environmental constraints and objectives. The conclusions will help the Randstad area and its main ports to become more sustainable while at the same accommodating increased freight flows. Many innovations are being developed but few enter the market successfully. The challenge lies in analyzing these innovations in sustainable, financial and organizational terms. A more detailed research proposal will be developed together with the PhD candidate.
