France, USA: PhD positions in the Robust Mathematical Modeling
Written by Suleman Shahid
Monday, 30 January 2006
Positions offered by the Robust Mathematical Modeling program
(2006)
1) The Soci€t€ de Calcul Math€matique (Paris, France) is looking for a student (mas-
ter or PhD level) in order to complete some research about the “Experimental
Probabilistic Hypersurface”, a probabilistic tool introduced by SCM in order to
store and exploit the information obtained from a small number of experiments,
when a large number of parameters may vary.
(Please see our web site for further description of the concept : www.scmsa.com.)
This student will work in his/her own university and will have to travel to Paris from
time to time.
Required skills :
A good level in probability ;
Fluent English ;
An open personality, since this concept will be used for industrial contacts. The stu-
dent should participate in these contacts.
Salary : SCM offers a neat salary of Euros 100 per month, during six months (plus
travel). Continuation of the project after the delay of six months is possible, depending
on the results.
2) Kent State University (Kent, Ohio, USA), together with SCM, will accept a Ph D
student for the Robust Mathematical Modeling program, starting fall 2006, for
three years. Studies will be performed in Kent, with some travels to Paris.
Re
quired skills are the same as above, plus the ability to teach elementary courses in
mathematics. Here again, the RMM program aims at providing industrial tools, so
the student should be willing and prepared to industrial contacts.
Students may apply to any of these programs, or to both. As said above,
previous activities, openness of personality will be a decisive factor
for choice. The applicants should send email to:
Prof Bernard Beauzamy
Chairman and CEO, Soci€t€ de Calcul Math€matique SA
They should send by email a file with detailed information and photo,
including a description of previous activities (part time jobs,
associations, travels, hobbies, and so on) and a letter of motivation,
explaining their interest in the RMM program. We insist that this
program is application-oriented, so our choice will not be made solely
on academic grounds.
