"Towards Active Integrated Optical Functions: From Dielectric Thin Films to
Micro-/Nano-cavities to Ultrashort-pulse Lasers"
At the Integrated Optical MicroSystems Group, MESA+ Research Institute,
University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands
Fields: Liquid phase epitaxy, waveguide fabrication technology, micro- and nano-structuring, rareearth-
ion spectroscopy, waveguide lasers, integrated optics, optical sensing.
Job Description:
Liquid-phase epitaxy and micro-/nano-structuring (lithography, RIE, FIB) of integrated optical
waveguides based on a rare-earth-ion-doped crystalline oxide material, potassium yttrium double
tungstate (KYW). Optical investigation (propagation losses, fluorescence, and waveguide lasing
properties). Design and realization of waveguide devices with active functionality (lasing, amplifiers).
The final goal is to integrate and demonstrate an on-chip light source combined with various functions
relevant for optical sensing in chemistry, biology, and/or medicine.
Requirements:
Master or Diploma in Physics, Optics, or Engineering before starting date.
Age max. 30 years.
Experience in crystal/layer growth, general clean-room work, lithography and patterning techniques,
characterization techniques of materials properties, laser physics, or integrated optics helpful.
Very good knowledge of scientific English and willingness to learn Dutch.
Start: April 1st, 2006 or within three months from this date.
