Department of Computer Science
Intelligent Database Research Laboratory
LifeDB Database Project

We are pleased to announce two Research Assistant Professor positions in the Department of
Computer Science, Wayne State University. These are limited term non-tenured positions.
Initial appointment will be made for one year and the renewal will be based on the annual
review of performance. These positions are funded through Wayne State University
Research Enhancement Grant in Computational Biology, an NIH Perinatology Research Branch grant
at WSU, and an NSF SEIII grant. These grants are made available for the development of new
autonomous data integration technologies to enhance the LifDB database management system
being developed at Wayne State University.

LifeDB is a 3 year collaborative research project that involves Wayne State Medical School,
Karmanos Cancer Institute (MI), Fox Chase Cancer Research Center (PA) and
Protein Data Bank (PDB). As part of the LifeDB database project, we are developing a
declarative query language for autonomous data integration and workflow management in
Life Sciences. The anticipated research will leverage our previous work on PickUp wrapper
generation and OntoBuilder ontology matching systems. A general purpose and declarative
workflow query language BioFlow is being designed to exploit the autonomous nature of the
PickUp and OntoBuilder tools. We envision a data management system in which users will be
able to design ad hoc and practical applications using BioFlow and the internet with minimal
human intervention. The approach will be based on sound theoretical foundations as well as
practical considerations.

The appointee will have access to the Integration Informatics research lab, established with
support from an NSF MRI grant, and about 11 PhD students. Substantial support for conference
travel and research facilities are also available.

Ideal candidates will have demonstrated background in Computer Science with a special
emphasis on databases. Candidates with experience in query language design, data integration,
workflow management, ontology, and wrapper technology will be given the highest priority.
All positions will start in Fall 2007 and applications will be considered as they arrive.

Applications for consideration should be sent by e-mail to the following address with a CV,
research statement, list of publications, three sample publications, and names of three
references. The applicant will need to contact his/her referees and request them to send
their recommendations directly to the address below by e-mail.
