PhD student
Tasks:
1. Perform clinical permeability studies and endoscopic biopsy methods to measure aspects of epithelial integrity and epithelial permeability
2. Collect tissue material for transcriptomics and proteomics analysis in the search and validation of biomarkers of integrity and permeability
3. Use dietary and pharmaceutical intervention to study the role of serotonergic signalling and the Enteric Nervous System in epithelial integrity-related phenotypic changes
4. Assess secreted products of enteroendocrine cells as biomarkers of intestinal epithelial integrity.

Requirements


University Graduate
Candidate profile
Master’s degree in Nutrition and Health or similar biomedical degree.
Experience and/or demonstrated interest in:
·intestinal physiology in particular epithelial permeability
·nutrition research
·biochemical, cell biological, and molecular biological techniques
.transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, or other ‘omics’ approaches
. bioinformatics

Additional information about the job:
This PhD project is part of a large and multidisciplinary project within
TI Food&Nutrition involving 5 postdocs, 5 PhD students and 2
technicians. This team is supervised by 4 senior scientists with broad
experience in the relevant fields of research. The general aims are 1.
to uncover by which mechanisms nutrients and microorganisms have effects
on the intestinal epithelial integrity, 2. to identify relevant
biomolecules that represent these mechanisms, and to validate these as
biomarkers for epithelial integrity, and 3. to develop these biomarkers
into models that can be used to screen nutrients for beneficial effect
on the intestinal epithelium.

Conditions of employment

Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2000 - 2500
Salaryscale 10. Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 1+ 3 years
Maximum hours per week: 40

Additional conditions of employment:
Appointement by the University of Maastricht and labour conditions as for the dutch PhD's stated by the VSNU. The work will be carried out within the a project of TI Food and Nutrition.
