Written by Administrator
Saturday, 02 June 2007
2 positions as PhD student within the field of Complex Decision Making are open
for 3 years. The positions are part of the project "Complex Decision-Making
Under Uncertainty: Experiments with a Robotic Assistant for Persons with
Disabilities" and the details can be found in http://www.damas.ift.ulaval.ca/~chaib/Sujets-PhDs.pdf. The project is supported by the provincial agency of Québec FQRNT (Le Fonds
québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies)
.
PROJECT The goals of this project are two-fold. In the first part,
it aims to design an agent that can (i) learn how to determine and update
its states, actions, transitions, rewards via a partially observable Markov
decision process (POMDP) model ; (ii) make robust sequential decisions;
(iii) interact with other entities in its environment via a spoken dialogue
system. In the second part, it aims to validate the techniques generated in
the first step in the context of a robotic assistant for individuals with
disabilities where the objective is to maximize the mobility and reduce the
cognitive load for the target population.
QUALITY of The ENVIRONMENT
TRAINING All the members of the team in charge of this project are currently
supervising a substantial number of postdoctoral, graduate and undergraduate
students. All these students are integrated into various aspects pertaining
to complex decision making, machine learning and robotics, and therefore
will be able to support the new PhD students.
QUALIFICATIONS The
applicants must have relevant background and research interest fitting the
project and the activities of the group in charge of the project. The PhD
students must hold a master degree, or equivalent, with a specialization in
optimization, machine learning or formal AI (oriented complex decision
making).
DUTIES and FINANCIAL SUPPORT The PhD students must take
part in the Computer Science Department approved PhD program, Laval
University--Québec, Canada. A financial support of 18 000$CND/ year is
assured for a period of 3 years.
APPLICATION Interested
candidates are requested to contact Professor Brahim Chaib-draa by email:
