Call: The Flood Relief Effort by the Doctors of Nishtar Hospital
About us:
We are a group of doctors and their friends who are working for flood relief in and around Multan. We are not-for-profit, non-registered, non NGO and non-political and completely based on volunteerism.
Our background: We worked during the 2005 Earthquake, this involved a medical camp that did over 200 surgeries; we also sent in 50 truck-loads of material, over two hundred- thousand (200,000) tin roofing sheets, and designed and installed 100 insulated prefabricated huts. We also rehabilitated the water supplies of about a dozen villages.
In all the monetary size of our effort was about $300,000 (three hundred thousand dollars); this money was collected from friends and relatives and people who thought they could trust us.
The current relief effort: The disaster wrought by the present flood is much greater in magnitude than the calamity of the 2005 earthquake, both in terms of the number of people involved and the area over which this is spread. Multan and its surroundings is one of the hardest hit areas and we have decided to help in whatever way we can.
1) We have already sent in two medical teams that are seeing about a thousand patients every day, more teams will be dispatched tomorrow (13th August).
2) We are providing food for 700 people who are stranded on a spur, near Kot Addu, the nearest shore is 7 km away and food supply and evacuation is being done by boat.
3) We are planning on sending, by day-after tomorrow, 3 tonnes of food and 5000 (five thousand) 1.5 litres bottles into the flood hit area.
We need money, food, medicines, building material and anything you think we might use.
We have tried to work incognito but we also understand that we need interface persons. The names and emails of those who have agreed to share their contact information are given below.
