The Astronomy Group at the University of Sussex, School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, has six PhD studentships available starting September 2014.

Two STFC-funded awards, on any research topic supported by the Astronomy group.
One EU-funded award, with the Infrared Astronomy team.

Three School Postgraduate Studentships, one each with Dr Mark Sargent, Dr Robert E Smith, and Dr Stephen Wilkins on topics agreed with the supervisor. Applicants may propose research topics, or request consideration for the topics published on the Astronomy Group webpages (below).

Award amount

£13726 per annum plus UK/EU fees waived for 3.5 years.

Applicants should hold, or expect to hold, a UK first class honours degree or a good UK Masters degree (or equivalent non-UK qualifications) in a relevant subject.  If you are unsure about the equivalence of your qualifications, contact us on

The two STFC awards are available for UK students. Some EU students may be eligible. Eligibility may be checked on the STFC website

The EU-funded award is available to UK and EU students.

The School Postgraduate Studentships are open to UK and EU students. Overseas students (ex-EU) will be considered, but higher fees are payable due to UK government requirements. We are unable to fund the additional fees ourselves. Overseas students must state in their application how they propose to fund the additional fees. Fees for Overseas students in 2013-14 were £16200 per year, UK/EU fees (waived by the award) were £3900 per year. For 2014-15, fees are likely to rise approximately in line with UK inflation.

Apply on-line via the University of Sussex portal, please click on the ‘Apply’ button below. State which studentship you are applying for in the “Other Information” / “Funding” section of the form.

The deadline for applications is 9 February 2014.

Interviews are likely to be held in the period 5 – 19 March.  Interviews may be held over internet phone if necessary.
