Netherlands: PhD position or PostDoc on Dynamic Maintenance Planning and Service Logistics in Maritime Supply Chains
This research position is part of the research project “Integrated Maintenance and Service Logistics Concepts for Maritime Assets”, in close collaboration with industrial partners. We aim te improve the predictability of maintenance and service logistics demand, and to optimize maintenance plans and the service logistics supporting this maintenance. Four full-time researchers will work on this project. Your challenge is to develop methods for constructing dynamic maintenance plans using information from condition monitoring and planned system deployment (e.g. naval missions) in the next period of (say) one year. The resulting plan should include a specification of required resources (service engineers, tools, spare parts) for a given system. As feasibility of the resource planning is a key issue, you will collaborate closely with a researcher at Eindhoven University of Technology who will work on this topic. Also, you will collaborate closely with a researcher within the department of maintenance engineering at University of Twente on condition monitoring and failure prediction as input for your maintenance plans.Examples of decisions that you have to cover are (i) on-site or off-site repair, (ii) corrective versus preventive maintenance (time based, use based, or condition based), (iii) opportunity-based maintenance (iv) clustering of maintenance activities with a shared setup. You will use the business cases of our industrial partners to develop, validate and test the planning methods that you will develop. These industrial partners include asset owners (e.g. Royal Netherlands Navy), system suppliers (e.g. Thales Netherlands, Imtech, Damen Shipyards) and logistics service providers (Seamar).
You have at least a master’s degree in a relevant field, such as industrial engineering, applied mathematics, or econometrics. As a PostDoc, you also have a PhD degree in a similar relevant field. You have thorough knowledge of stochastic operations research techniques. Knowledge of and/or experience with maintenance, reliability and after-sales service logistics is a clear advantage. Further, you have a good knowledge of programming languages and tools (e.g. Delphi) in order to develop prototype decisions support tools. You are able to work both independently as well as in a project team, and you have good communicative skills. You are fluent in English.

As a PostDoc you will be appointed in a full-time position for a period of three years (38 hours a week), The salary is based on the job profile Researcher level 4 (under the University System for Job Classification (UJC)).and will be in the range of € 2427,- to € 3831,- per month.
As a PhD candidate you will be appointed in a full-time position for a period of four years (38 hours a week), leading to a dissertation. The gross monthly salary for a PhD increases from € 2083,- in the first year to € 2664,- in the final year. The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities and depends on your experience.
