Description: You will undertake finite element analysis of the stresses generated in current and proposed tidal turbine designs, incorporating novel materials and failure mechanisms. You will undertake mechanical testing of candidate blade materials in air and seawater environments to determine design data and analyse failed components and test pieces and help develop lifting models related to the failure modes observed.

Eligibility:You should have a degree in Materials Science or Engineering and a PhD (or be in the final stages of completing one) in a relevant subject area where advanced mechanical testing and finite element modelling form a significant part of the work. The ability to plan and carry out static and dynamic mechanical testing experiments and analyse the data produced with minimal support is essential. Some knowledge of scale effects in the mechanical properties of materials would also be desirable.

Duration:The post is fixed term for a period of 18 months.
