Job description

As postdoctoral researcher you will be involved in the optimisation and validation of muscle diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in neuromuscular disorders. Skeletal muscles of patients with neuromuscular disorders like Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy are characterized by high amounts of fat disposition. As a result, current DTI techniques of skeletal muscles are insufficient to obtain reliable images. Your work will consist of pulse programming of the MR scanner, acquiring images of healthy controls and patients with Becker muscular dystrophy, and analysing the results.

Research will be performed on Philips 7 and 3 tesla human systems  at the LUMC in Leiden, and is part of a multi-disciplinary approach in the study of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy. You will write scientific publications, and present your results on national and international conferences.

Requirements

You should have a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Technical Medicine, Biomedical Technology, Physics or similar. Candidates with a background or interest in MR imaging or MR spectroscopy are strongly encouraged to apply.

Conditions of employment

You will be employed on the basis of a 36-hour week. Appointment is for 3 years. Your salary will depend on your qualifications and experience, with a maximum of € 4,001,- gross per month based on a full time position (scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for University Hospitals).

The departments of Radiology, Neurology and Human Genetics collaborate closely in research on Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, as well as on several other diseases.

The MR research group at the C.J. Gorter Centre in Leiden currently has six full time physicists, with a number of postdocs and graduate students. The working environment can be described as truly multi-disciplinary, with high research standards and with an active and social atmosphere. The departments of Neurology and Human Genetics play a pivotal role in the development of antisense oligonucleotide treatment options for Duchenne muscular dystrophy and are participating in several clinical trials on this topic. The LUMC is curator of the national database on Duchenne in which clinical and genetic data of more than 500 Dutch Duchenne and Becker patients are registered.
