Job description

We are seeking a PhD student (4 year terms) to join a recently funded Dinalog project. The main objective of this project is to strengthen the Dutch logistics supply chain by addressing three major challenges: the need for a unified logistic network, the need to increase the efficiency, reliability and sustainable delivery of logistic services, and the ambition to trigger and push the “mental switch” of both shippers and 4PLs, towards a synchromodal way of working, in which the decision about the mode of transport for the next part of a route is made as late as possible, allowing optimal flexibility in routing and improved quality of service and sustainability. More concretely, the main objectives of this project are:

  1. the design of an synchromodal logistic network model
  2. the design of an integrated synchromodal logistics service platform,
  3. the development of related planning and scheduling policies, and of synchromodal serious gaming.

As such the project aims to substantially contribute to the development of scientific knowledge at the interface of, operations research, serious gaming and IT in synchromodal logistics.

The research activities of the future PhD candidate will be subordinated to the second project goal and will focus on the design and implementation of a platform architecture to support synchromodal logistics service provisioning, that (i) provides solutions for the integration with back-office systems, on-board devices, and other data sources, (ii) provides pluggable information services, business intelligence, monitoring services, and decision support services (e.g., real-time planning adjustments), and (iii) handles interoperability problems in the logistic network (where such problems depend on the partners’ diversity and autonomy, and on the heterogeneity of employed technology/data sources).

Ideally, you should have :

  • a master’s degree in Business Information Technology, or Computer Science
  • strong quantitative skills and analytic thinking
  • familiarity with the design and development of software in service-oriented architectures and with web service technology
  • fluent written and spoken English, and willingness to learn Dutch if required for the sake of the research
  • independent research skills
  • knowledge and/or publications in the following fields is an advantage: business intelligence, modeling and analysis of business process, enterprise architecture and software.

Conditions of employment

We offer a very challenging position in an inspiring environment: the Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems Department of the School of Management and Governance. As a PhD candidate you will collaborate closely with the other two PhD candidates funded from this project, which will carry out research in the areas of modeling a synchromodal logistic infrastructure network and of Flexible Synchromodal Logistics Planning and Serious Gaming. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to work directly with the industrial project partners, (i.e., software companies and large logistic service providers), on their locations.

As a PhD candidate you will be appointed in a full-time position for a period of four years, at the end of which you must have completed your PhD thesis. The gross monthly salary for a PhD increases from € 2.083,- in the first year to € 2.664,- in the final year (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). In addition, the University of Twente offers additional attractive employment conditions.
Starting date: by arrangement in the period January 2014.
