The aim of the project is to elucidate the contribution of hepatic bile acid uptake to the systemic hormonal function of bile acids and to investigate whether modulation of bile acid transport can be exploited to improve obesity-related disease including type II diabetes and atherosclerosis. We use state-of-the-art molecular/cellular techniques combined with genetic models and diet-induced models for metabolic diseases and/or impaired bile acid transport.

Experience with animal models and a license to perform animal experiments (art 9) is desirable. You have a keen interest in understanding the molecular basis of (patho)physiology and its (future) implications for the clinic, and are proficient in English.

The AMC is more than just a hospital. It is a world in which patient care, research and education are integrated, and in which people are always central. It is an academic world full of possibilities for talented individuals that are looking for a place where they can excel. Thinking big, daring to dream, cooperating internationally. And never letting yourself be put off by ‘It’s not possible’ or ‘It won’t work anyway’. That is the AMC mentality.

As a temporary researcher you will be contracted by AMC Medical Research. Daily supervision will be by Dr. S.F.J. van de Graaf together with Prof. dr. U.H.W. Beuers and Prof. dr. R.P.J. Oude Elferink. The liver and intestinal research of the AMC is concentrated in the Tytgat Institute for Liver and Intestinal Research (affiliated with the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology) and this will be your workplace. Housing more than 70 basic and clinical scientists, we are one of the leading international research centers in gastroenterology and hepatology. Research in the Tytgat Institute is both fundamental and translational, but always built on a clinical question, providing results that can be translated into clinical practice. Extensive collaboration between physicians and researchers ensures a close link between the clinic and basic research.
