Netherlands: Post-doc Position in Lewis Acid Catalysis for Selective Activation of Carbohydrates at Eindhoven University of Technology

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Job description

Lignocellulosic biomass is one of the most promising renewable feedstock for the production of bulk chemical and fuels. The carbohydrate fraction of biomass can be converted via acid-catalyzed paths to furanic platform molecules with a wide range of downstream applications. Although high yields of desired products can be obtained from fructose using different homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, the selective conversion of its more abundant isomer glucose is much more difficult. Selective isomerization of glucose to fructose has to be achieved prior to the dehydration to the desired platform molecules.

In this project, a highly active and regenerable microporous catalyst with well-defined Lewis acidic sites for glucose isomerization will be developed. The influence of the confinement environment on the reactivity of the Lewis acid active sites towards sugar activation will be investigated. Special attention will be devoted to the optimization of the reaction conditions in the batch mode and investigation of reaction kinetics. The developed catalysts will form a basis for the design of a continuous process for glucose isomerization to fructose.

We seek highly talented, motivated and enthusiastic candidates who recently finished their PhD or will obtain their PhD degree soon in Catalysis, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry. Experience in heterogeneous catalysis and materials synthesis are highly appreciated. The abilities of the candidates should be evident from her/his CV and publication list. Outstanding practical and analytical skills, initiative and creativity are expected. A successful candidate should demonstrate good communication skills, fluency in English and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multinational team.
