Job description

The position

As PhD student in the Department of Endocrinology, you will study the role of recently identified gene targets in lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis. Your work will combine studies on lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis in humanised mouse models and in-depth mechanistic studies in cell cultures. The position involves close collaboration with various academic institutes in the Netherlands including LACDR, AMC and UMCG, as well as TNO.

The project

The project focuses on the role of brown adipose tissue that has recently been demonstrated to be present and active in adults. Since brown adipose tissue contributes significantly to energy expenditure by dissipating lipids into heat, it is regarded as a novel therapeutic target to combat diabetes and atherosclerosis. The aim of the project is to identify novel pharmaceutical targets for the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis.

  • You hold an MSc in Biomedical Sciences, Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medical Biology or a related field, and have expertise in physiological studies in rodents and an affinity for the field of lipid metabolism.
  • Experience in handling radioactivity and mice is preferred, and you should have followed courses for the Radiation Protection Course Level 5B and Article 9 of the Animal Experimentation Act.
  • You should be a team player, and be flexible, accurate and proactive.

Conditions of employment

You will be employed on the basis of a 36-hour week. Appointment is for the duration of the degree. Your salary will depend on your qualifications and experience, with a maximum of € 2,141 gross per month in the first year, amounting to € 2,743 in the fourth year based on a full time position (scale PhD students, CLA UMC).
