Job description

Your research will be conducted within the framework of the project ‘Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) Toolkit’ (financed by EU’s FP7-program). RRI is a relatively new concept that conveys the ambition to steer science and innovation towards more societal desirable ends, incorporating socio-economic, cultural and ethical perspectives along the way. To this end, scientific and non-scientific actors need to have the concepts, methods and tools in place to actively engage in the interactive process that leads to responsible innovation. The program aims to develop and use a Training and Dissemination Toolkit on RRI in close collaboration with over 20 scientific and societal partners across Europe.

You also contribute to teaching in courses and programs coordinated by the Athena Institute on a variety of subjects such as science and technology studies, science communication, health policy and management, and global health. The language of instruction in the bachelor programs is Dutch (apart from the minor program) and the master programs are taught in English.

Requirements

• You have a PhD preferably in the field of science and technology studies, innovation studies, science communication or other discipline(s) resulting in an integrated natural sciences and social sciences background;
• Your research experience demonstrates your expertise in the cross-cutting approach of science and technology studies or innovation studies;
• You have published in refereed international journals or books;
• Expertise in interactive and participatory research methods is highly welcomed;
• You have experience in raising external research funds;
• You hold a network of relevant international contacts;
• You write and speak Dutch and English fluently. Teaching experience in English is a plus;
• You are a team player;
• You are very well capable to supervise a theoretical thesis, projects and internships (for example, you received positive evaluations from students).

Conditions of employment

The appointment will be for a period of 1 year with a possible extension of 2 years conditional upon assessment of adequate functioning. You can find information about our excellent fringe benefits of employment atwww.workingatvu.nl, like:

The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and depending on experience, range from a minimum of € 3.037,- gross per month (salary scale 10.5 up to a maximum of € 4.462,- gross per month (salary scale 11) base on a fulltime employment.

De position is offered within the Section Science Communication of the Athena Institute, Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences. The institute’s mission is to study and design interfaces between science and society to contribute both to a deeper understanding of innovation processes as well as a responsible implementation of research and innovation in society. The Science Communication section specializes in the development of methodologies that articulate citizens’ ideas and concerns, facilitate multi-stakeholder involvement and co-create responsible innovation in an open dialogue between science and society.
