Salary£30,424 per annum

Description: The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Durham University seeks to appoint a postdoctoral researcher or equivalent, to begin in September 2013 (negotiable) for a 6 month period with possible extension for a further 6 months. The position is suitable for a post-doctoral researcher or for a researcher interested in taking sabbatical leave from their own Institution. The position is funded by Procter and Gamble. The researcher will work independently on projects within the general area of research supported by the grant. The project will be supervised by Dr Buddhapriya Chakrabarti and Professor Tom CB McLeish (Physics Department, Durham University). The key objective is to understand equilibrium surface partitioning for polymer mixtures. The experimental aspect of the project is jointly being undertaken by Dr Richard Thompson (Chemistry Department, Durham University) and Procter and Gamble (Schwalbach, Newcastle, Brussels).

Eligibility:We are looking for a candidate with a PhD in theoretical polymer physics/soft condensed matter physics. The candidate should be able to develop phenomenological theories of polymer mixtures, and carry out mean field theory and scaling calculations on such models. Familiarity with self-consistent field theory applied to polymers and an interest in numerical simulation are highly desirable, but not essential.

Note: Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in the University.
