Description: The Institute of Cryogenics at the University of Southampton invites applications for two postdoctoral research fellow posts in applied superconductivity and cryogenics.For more than 30 years the Institute of Cryogenics has been actively engaged in fundamental and applied research in cryogenic engineering and superconductivity. The institute contains experts in cryogenic systems, thermodynamics and cryogenic coolers, cryogenic safety, handling of cryogen and enhanced heat transfer, and superconducting materials and applications. The synergy of such a wide range of expertise gives the Institute a unique strength in extending the frontier of cryogenic technology and developing multiple disciplinary research projects.

The two positions are associated with the EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) funded collaborative projects, Hi-Lumi and SupraPower. The Hi-Lumi project ( is a design study on the high luminosity upgrade of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and SupraPower ( on superconducting generators for offshore wind turbines.The Institute of Cryogenics will be involved in the performance testing, stability, quench propagation and cryogenic integration of MgB2 superconductors at temperatures above 4.2 K.The two posts have distinct but complementary roles: one with experimental and design emphasis, and the other focusing on numerical modelling. The post holders will have substantial opportunity to work closely with other European partners in the projects.

Eligibility: The candidates are expected to have a PhD in Physics, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. We are particularly interested in candidates with experiences in at least one of the following areas: cryogenic design, superconductor characterisation and modelling, and numerical simulation of heat transfer and electromagnetic fields.
