UK: Post Doctoral Research Assistant in Earth and Enviornmental Sciences at British Geological Survey

Description: The British Geological Survey is one of the world’s leading and forward thinking geological science institutes with a focus on both public-good science for government and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes.  A vacancy has arisen in the Energy & Marine Geoscience Programme for a highly motivated and enthusiastic geoscientist to work on characterisation of shales as a potential source of methane (shale gas) at our headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham.The post is a PDRA (Post-Doctoral Research Assistant) and will be a three year fixed term appointment. You will work closely with an experienced team of geologists, organic geochemists and laboratory scientists. A personalised training plan will be prepared.

Eligibility: You will be educated to at least 2:1 Bsc and have a PhD and you will have covered modules in palynology and palynofacies, sedimentology, organic geochemistry, geology, earth sciences, environmental science or analytical chemistry. You should have an aptitude for experimental work and have a practical, hands-on technical approach. Background knowledge of shale gas would also be an asset since this is a current growth area. In addition you should have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The primary tasks will be:

  • Developing models of primary controls of shale gas prospectivity including formation and distribution of organic matter and sequence stratigraphy of shale sequences
  • Palynofacies analysis
  • Analysis of organic geochemical data
  • Data manipulation, interpretation and reporting.
  • Presentation of results both internally and externally.

Salary:Starting salary will be between £26,450 per annum rising to £29,710 per annum after 3 years service (pay award pending.)  Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.  A generous benefits package is also offered, including a company pension scheme, childcare voucher scheme, 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays.
