Catalysis is an essential tool in lab- and industrial-scale syntheses of both simple and highly complex molecules, but it is used nearly exclusively as a means to achieve formation of molecular structures as homogeneous systems, with the role of the catalyst ending with the formation of the product. In nature, catalysis is often used to control localised formation of molecules and supramolecular structures, to control their stability and response, for motion, and for signalling. It is the goal of this project to use molecular scale catalysis as a means to control and enhance the dynamic behaviour of artificial supramolecular materials, beyond the mere formation of their components, leading to response, motion and structuring in time and space.
For this project we are looking for an enthusiastic, talented and ambitious PhD student for a challenging research programme studying the fabrication, characterisation and application of soft molecular materials. The goal is to develop reversible molecular networks with adjustable mechanical properties, that can be formed in situ, with control over time and space. Most of the work will be performed in the Advanced Soft Matter section (Dr. R. Eelkema, Prof. J. H. van Esch) at the Department of Chemical Engineering of Delft University of Technology. Some aspects will be carried out in collaborations both within and outside the Department.

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a recent MSc in chemistry (preferably organic, physical or polymer), or chemical engineering. We are looking for a PhD student with a background in the fabrication and characterisation of soft materials, preferably with additional experience in organic, polymer and/or supramolecular chemistry. Experience and practical skills in the synthesis and analysis of the structure and properties of supramolecular structures or soft materials are essential. We seek candidates with proficiency in experimental design, data analysis and interpretation. Experience in the following areas would be advantageous: (a) rheology (b) NMR, UV, fluorescence spectroscopy (c) chemical kinetics, (d) microscopy (light, confocal, AFM, SEM, TEM). Very good spoken and written English is mandatory.

Materials of interest may range from bio-organic to opto-electronic, nanostructured materials.
