Description: The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde wishes to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate within the Advanced Composites Group (ACG).  The ACG is an interdisciplinary research group with an international reputation in research and development in composite materials.  The ACG has a unique range of materials expertise and research facilities which are strongly supplemented through networking with the Glasgow Research Partnership in Engineering and the Advanced Materials Research Laboratory.

This position is funded through the EPSRC under the Towards Affordable, Closed-Loop Recyclable Future Low Carbon Vehicle Structures (TARF-LCV) programme. The project has the aim of laying down a solid scientific and technological foundation for future LCV development in the strategic area of advanced materials, low carbon manufacturing technologies, holistic mass-optimised vehicle structure design and closed-loop recycling of end life of vehicles. This aim will be achieved through large scale collaborative studies among eight universities and industry partners. The principal objective of the ACG contribution to TARF-LCV is to provide recycling solutions for Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics based on the interfacial engineering of recycled glass fibres.

The Research Associate will research and develop recyclable polymer matrix composites for LCV body structure with main focus on the regeneration of recycled glass fibre properties and participation into development of effective approaches for using short carbon fibre in composites and carbon neutral sheet moulding compounds for structural applications. You will liaise directly with researchers at other groups in this collaborative programme and will conduct work at other research centres as appropriate.  You will write up research findings for publication in relevant academic journals and other appropriate channels.

Eligibility:
Prospective candidates should therefore demonstrate experience in all of the following areas.

  • A thorough knowledge of the structure-performance relationships of glass fibres and polymers.
  • Broad experience of laboratory based materials analytical and testing techniques.
  • In depth knowledge of glass fibre composite materials
  • Control and characterisation of composite interfaces.

To be further considered for this post, you must have a good first degree in mechanical engineering or other relevant area and a PhD in the area of Polymer Composites (preferably glass fibre reinforced).  As the programme has strong collaboration links with both industry and academia partners, excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a proven ability to network both internally and externally are required.  You must be able to plan and organise your workload with the ability work both on your own as part of your team.  You will also be able to demonstrate mentoring skills and experience which will be necessary to the supervision of a number of associated undergraduate research projects.
