Program Sustainable Energy: This program is focused on chemical reactions of importance to the sustainable and efficient production and storage of energy, as well as the subsequent usage of stored energy, on a fundamental level. We employ advanced spectroscopic techniques, nano-imaging, inorganic synthesis, and theoretical methods to elucidate the molecular processes that are at the basis of the conversion of solar energy to chemical energy. In addition, new catalysts, materials, and molecular and supra-molecular systems are being developed and investigated. The ultimate aim is to make a fundamental contribution to a sustainable cyclic chemistry, which is efficient, scalable and robust.

Program Chemical Biology:  Chemical biology research at Leiden University focuses on the study and manipuation of physiological processes at the molecular level. With the aid of approaches and concepts inherently rooted in chemistry fundamental biological problems are approached. The driving force behind the Leiden chemical biology research is the ability to design functional molecules. These are applied to map study and interfere with biomolecular interactions of various origins. Chemical biology research at Leiden University is inspired by physiological processes, which form the basis of human diseases, and by this virtue has a strong link to medicinal chemistry and biomedical research.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In both programmes three new PhD projects are initiated in which the principle investigators combine there specific expertises to perform challenging research. Depending on your expertise and field of interest you may join one of these projects.

  • The candidates should hold an MSc’s degree in chemistry.
  • The candidates should have an excellent grade list.
  • A good spoken and written English level.

We offer:

We offer a vibrant environment to develop on-the-job the skills and networks that a successful academic needs. Appointment will be according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (cao Nederlandse Universiteiten), for a period of one year with an extension of three years after positive evaluation of capabilities and compatibility. Ultimately the appointment must lead to a completion of a PhD thesis.  The gross monthly salary is set on € 2.042,- in the first year up to € 2.612,- in year four. An appointment with Leiden University includes a pension build-up and facilitates other benefits such as an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.
All our PhD students are embedded in the Leiden University Graduate School of Science. Our graduate school offers several PhD training courses at three levels: professional courses, skills training and personal effectiveness. In addition, advanced courses to deepen scientific knowledge are offered by the research school. Candidates from outside The Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
