The salary scale: Research Assistants is £24,049 to £27,047 and Research Associates £27,854 to £36,298

Description: A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Research Associate funded by Rolls-Royce plc., in the Department of Engineering, to carry out CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) work on the aerodynamics of transonic fans.Large scale simulations will be performed on a dedicated GPU cluster. The candidate must be familiar with CFD techniques and also aerodynamics of unsteady flows and the analysis of complex time varying fluid flows.  The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are:

1. Research and scholarship:

  • Perform large scale unsteady flow simulations
  • Analyse aerodynamic output
  • Engage in analysis code development
  • Write up research work for presentation and publication;
  • Translate knowledge of advances in the subject areas into research activity;
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies,
  • Communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature.

2. Teaching and learning support:

  • May assist in the supervision of student projects;
  • Provide limited supervision/instruction to classes;
  • May plan and deliver seminars relating to research area.

3. Liaison and networking:

  • Liaise with colleagues and students;
  • Of joint research projects led by principal investigator.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are:

the successful candidate will have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Engineering, Applied Mathematics or Computing. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics. Experience of high performance computing will be useful along with program development. A good understanding of aerodynamics is needed. Experience of managing own workload is necessary and the ability to constantly update knowledge.
