Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of History,  for the BOF research project “Collectors of the ‘wreckage of history’. Reconstructing the ‘antiquarian milieu’ in Belgium (ca. 1760 – ca. 1860)”. This project wants to offer a reconstruction and fuller understanding of the diversity of actors constituting an emerging milieu of antiquarian collectors during the dawn of the Belgium nation state (ca. 1760-ca. 1860).
  • You contribute to teaching and research in the Department of History en the Centre for Urban History.

Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree  in History, or Archaeology, or Art history or another relevant discipline;
  • You can submit outstanding academic results;
  • Also students in the final year of their degree can apply;
  • Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply;
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy(;
  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative, customer-oriented and cooperative;
  • You have the linguistic and paleographic skills to handle 18th and 19th century primary sources in French and Dutch.

We offer

  • A doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation;
  • The start date of scholarship will be October 1st 2013, November 1st 2013, December 1st 2013 or January 1st 2014;
  • A monthly grant amount ranging from € 2.124,11 – € 2.265,67;
  • A dynamic and stimulating work environment.
