The PhD student will be investigating alarmins
(S100A8/9) and Wnt proteins, derived from activated macrophages which
recently have been shown to be important in regulating cartilage and
bone destruction during rheumatic diseases. The work will be mainly
carried out in Nijmegen (PhD student) or in Munster and includes
travelling between Nijmegen and Munster.

Tests the effects of the proteins in animal models of rheumatic diseases

Investigates the effects of these proteins in in vitro cartilage
and bone destruction assays, thereby using moleculair biology and
biochemical techniques.

PhD-students and conducts research in medical research. The project
will be in close cooperation with the department of Immunology in
Munster (Germany) and is financed by the Dutch Arthritis Foundation. In
this project we aim to get insight in the mechanism of cartilage/bone
destruction by macrophage derived proteins and to develop drug targets
which can be used for treatment of rheumatic diseases.
