The Institute of Remote Sensing and Environmental Physics (IFE/IUP) at the Physics department of the University of Bremen offers a PhD position for 3 years with payment according to TV-L 13 /2 for a PhD on the topic of Development and verification of profile retrieval algorithms to analyse ground-based UV/vis measurements

The Institute of Environmental Physics of the University of Bremen performs since 1993 quasi-continuous observations of atmospheric trace gases from the ground by measuring the absorption of visible and near ultraviolet sunlight scattered from the sky. Abundances of molecules such as ozone, NO2, halogen radicals, formaldehyde and glyoxal are derived by means of a Differential Optical Absorption (DOAS) algorithm and a radiative transfer model. The measurement system has been extended to a Multi-Axis (MAX-) DOAS and new instruments have been set up in Ny-Ålesund (Spitsbergen, Norway), Nairobi (Kenya) and Merida (Venezuela) forming the Bremian DOAS Network for Atmospheric Measurements (BREDOM). Objectives of the Ph.D. position are:

    * to improve and apply algorithms for the determination of vertical profiles of trace gases using data from all BREDOM sites
    * to further develop the MAX-DOAS instruments for the measurement of atmospheric trace gases
    * to compare MAX-DOAS with other trace gas measurement techniques and with results from atmospheric models
    * to extend the BREDOM network and to participate in validation campaigns

The candidate should:

    * have a German Diplom or a Master of Science degree in Physics, Meteorology, Mathematics or comparable fields
    * have excellent programming skills in at least one higher programming language (e.g. C, C++, Delphi, Pascal, Fortran 90, Matlab)
    * have interest in data analysis and the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere
    * have good knowledge in written and spoken German and / or English
    * have the willingness to go on business trips of several days’duration outside Germany/Europe
    * preferably also have knowledge on the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere and on remote sensing

The Institute of Environmental Physics offers excellent working conditions and a friendly atmosphere. The research programme is integrated in interdisciplinary national and international research projects (EU, DFG etc.) and is performed in co-operation with the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research, the University of Merida, and the United Nations Environment Programme.

For more information, please visit the web pages of our institute http://www.iup.uni-bremen.de/eng/ . Detailed information on the research topic and the DOAS group at the IUP can be found at http://www.doas-bremen.de

As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification, disabled persons will be given priority. Please send your application with all usual information (CV, documentation of the academic record etc.) and the reference number A36/07 to
