Germany: Ph.D. and Postdoc Positions (Physics-Math)

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Applicants are invited for a postdoc and a Ph.D. Position in submm/THz astronomy with the CONDOR group at the University of Cologne.

We are a young research group within the KOSMA institute of the University of Cologne and have built one of the  first 1.5 THz heterodyne receivers. THz observations obtained with this receiver will be used to shed new light on the very earliest stages of star formation using the ground transition of H2D+, as well as on the dense, hot molecular cores of massive stars using the high-J (J=11, 12, 13) transitions of CO. Recently,  the instrument has successfully obtained first light observations on the APEX telescope. It is intended that the slightly modified receiver will be part of GREAT and will be one of the first instruments on board of SOFIA.

We are looking for candidates who are interested in the instrumental aspects of and/or astronomical observations with CONDOR. The ideal postdoc has prior experience in submm astronomy and/or with heterodyne receivers. For the Ph.D. candidate this is not required, but enthusiasm for the project is expected.
Applications, including a curriculum vitae, copies of most important University degrees/records and a letter of recommendations should be sent to M. C. Wiedner. The review of the applications will start 21 May 2007, but applications will continue to be accepted until the positions are filled.
