“The Uses of Mathematics in the Dutch Republic”

Duties
You will take part in a research program that aims at developing a
cultural history of mathematization in early modern science and
technology. The project studies the role of mathematics and
mathematicians in seventeenth-century Dutch culture in comparison with
other European cultures. Your primary responsibility will be to write a
dissertation elaborating the program’s themes. In addition you will
contribute to the program’s collaboration with international programs
in the history of early modern mathematics. As a member of the
Department, you will take part in ongoing discussions and activities of
a broader historical nature. Furthermore you will follow the
educational program for Ph.D. students, offered by the Huizinga
Institute, the inter-university centre for cultural history.

Requirements


University Graduate
Profile
You have a doctoral or master’s degree in a relevant field of European
history, science and technology studies, cultural studies or
philosophy. You are able to show your affinity for the history of
science and technology and are experienced in archival work. You are
highly motivated and enthusiastic and have the ability to work both
independently and in a team. The ability to read Dutch, or willingness
to learn, is necessary.

Conditions of employment


Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2000 – 2500
Salaryscale 10.
Maximum salary amount in Euro’s a month 2472
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 4 years
Maximum hours per week: 38

Offer
As a Ph.D. student you will be appointed (fulltime) for a period of
four years, including an assessment after one year, at the end of which
you must have completed a PhD. thesis. During this period you will work
in a challenging and exciting teaching and research environment, which
gives space for your ideas and initiatives. Your salary, in accordance
with the Dutch Universities Collective Labour Agreement, ranges from €
1.933 gross per month in the first year to € 2.472 gross in the fourth
year. Next to this we offer a broad package of excellent secondary
