Closing Date: April 10, 2006.

The Foundation of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon,
Portugal, is recruiting a young scientist to work at the Institute of
Oceanography of the University of Lisbon starting on 15 April 2006.

The position aims at developing a new research tool in the fields of
Oceanography and Seismology, making use of seismic methodologies (the
Multichannel Seismic Method) to study small-scale ocean physical
processes presently poorly resolved by conventional oceanographic
measurements.

The successful applicant will work within the EU funded STREPS project
"Geophysical Oceanography – GO" (http://www.dur.ac.uk/eu.go) using
past and newly acquired in situ (oceanographic and seismic) data and
numerical modelling tools. The applicant is expected to finish his/her
Ph.D. during or immediately after the scholarship period under the
supervision of professors from the University of Lisbon.

Applicants for the doctoral position should hold a M.Sc. degree (or,
alternatively, a final degree mark equal or over 16/20) in one of the
following fields:
Physical Oceanography, Geophysics, Meteorology, Applied Mathematics or
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics. Preference will be given to candidates
that reveal knowledge of oceanographic and/or seismic data processing
and ocean/atmosphere circulation numerical modelling.

The applicants should send the following documentation via email (PDF
format) or regular mail:
-Cover letter with motivation;
-Curriculum vitae including academic degrees (with final marks) and
list of publications;
-Proof of the academic degrees held;
-Names and addresses of three references.

It is the applicant’s
responsibility to contact the references and request that they submit
the support letters.
Only complete applications with letters of reference will be reviewed
by the committee.

The application to this position starts on the 13 March 2006 and the
deadline is 10 April 2006.

The period of appointment is 34 months. The scholarship amounts to
1200eur per month. All costs related to social insurance are supported
by the institution (through project grants), in accordance to the
rules stipulated by the PortugueseFoundation for Science and
Technology (see http://www.fct.mces.pt). The applicant will have to
support the Ph.D. fees on his/her own.

The applications and letters of reference should be sent to:
